Sourcegraph is a code intelligence platform that helps developers search, understand, and automate code changes across their entire codebase and the open internet. With a fully remote workforce and growing revenue across both B2B and B2C streams, the Sourcegraph finance team found themselves facing significant challenges navigating multi-state sales tax compliance after a demanding New York State audit.Â
With Anrok's comprehensive compliance platform and effortless Stripe integration, Sourcegraph transformed their sales tax processes from a stressful liability into a simple, automated workflow that gives them confidence in their compliance posture across 18 states.

From audit aftermath to compliance confidence
After being audited in New York, Sourcegraph's finance team knew they needed a comprehensive sales tax solution—and fast. The audit had been extraordinarily time-consuming and revealed significant compliance gaps.
"Prior to Anrok, we had no solution. Then we were audited by New York," explains Desene Sterling, Controller at Sourcegraph. "The clean-up was so time-consuming. We had to do big accruals and extensive research to set up our liabilities on our balance sheets."
While the company's B2B sales workflow was eventually brought into compliance, their newer product line—a new offering processed through Stripe—remained exposed. "We weren't collecting any sales tax on those transactions," Desene shares. "It felt like we were going backward."
As transaction volume increased significantly, the urgency to find a solution grew. With limited engineering resources available, connecting their Stripe payments to a tax engine seemed like a daunting challenge.
"I just assumed it was going to be very difficult to set it up,” says Desene. “I thought engineering was going to have to build our sales tax solution."
