J2 Health scales finance operations with Tabs and Anrok

How a lean healthcare startup automated contract-based billing and multi-state tax compliance—without adding headcount

J2 Health is a cloud-based software solution that helps health organizations build effective, member-centric provider networks. With a small team and growing complexity across contracts and jurisdictions, J2 needed to streamline back-office operations without hiring an in-house finance team.

With Tabs powering contract-based billing and Anrok handling automated sales tax compliance, J2 built a scalable, integrated finance stack that supports growth, simplifies compliance, and ensures everything runs properly with minimal oversight.

From tax liability to automated efficiency

As J2 Health expanded, so did the complexity of its billing and tax workflows. The company has customers and contractors in over 15 states, and that number is constantly growing. So staying compliant across jurisdictions was critical to reduce audit and penalty risks. Customer contracts also varied widely: some have monthly, quarterly, or annual billing cadences, pricing was often determined based on a customer’s specific geography, and others used customized terms tailored to individual accounts.

With over $100,000 in unfiled tax obligations across multiple states, J2 Health faced significant compliance risks and operational inefficiencies. The company didn’t have an internal accounting team, and its manual processes were leaving too much room for human error, like missed filings and time-consuming reconciliations. Navigating each state’s portal individually was also unsustainable. J2 needed a solution that could automate billing based on complex contract logic, accurately calculate tax across jurisdictions, and integrate seamlessly with both QuickBooks and their fractional finance support team.

"My goal was to build a system that could run without me. With Tabs and Anrok, I know our billing and tax operations are solid–even if the team changes."

Automating tax compliance with Tabs and Anrok

J2 Health implemented both Tabs and Anrok to create a unified, automated engine that manages even the most intricate contracts across multiple states. Tabs enables J2 to extract key contract terms, calculate billing schedules, and generate invoices automatically, eliminating manual processes and reliance on institutional knowledge. Anrok then ensures that every transaction is accurately taxed in real time, automating filings across jurisdictions and reducing compliance risk.

“Tabs helps us structure our billing in a scalable way,” says Anthony Fowler, VP and Head of People and Operations at J2 Health. “We can build logic once and know it'll run reliably every time.”

Together, the integration of Tabs and Anrok delivers end-to-end visibility and control across the J2’s QuickBooks and fractional finance team. The Anrok implementation was completed in just 3–4 hours and went live within a day.

With Anrok, J2 Health can automatically calculate accurate tax obligations for each invoice, process sales tax filings at scale, and manage remittances without manual intervention.  According to Anthony, “Anrok gives us peace of mind. We know we're meeting compliance requirements without spending hours in each state's portal.”

Transforming tax liabilities into scalable solutions

With Tabs and Anrok, J2 Health has eliminated over $100K in backlogged tax liabilities. Beyond cost savings, the combined integrations create a finance system functioning independently of any single team member, providing real-time visibility within a truly scalable solution that grows alongside the business.
